Blind Willie McTell RA Stella bridge Stella guitars were the instruments of choice for a generation of bluesmen such as Charley Patton, Willie Brown and Blind Blake. Stella 12-strings were played by Atlanta players such as Barbecue Bob Hicks and Willie McTell. Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter's Stella 12-string guitar has attained legendary status. He used heavy strings for that enormous sound, - 14's on the first course up to 70 for the lower octave on the 6th, tuned down to C. Country guitar pickers and blues musicians living in areas of the South and in Appalachia, far from the city, frequently played Stellas because they were both cheap and available locally or through mail-order . But equally important, they were often chosen solely on merits of their superior tone and volume. Charley Patton is said to have preferred his Stella to a Gibson, because the Stella was louder.
